Support Them

We meet eco-warriors all the time. These people are dedicated to doing their part for a more sustainable future, and sometimes they need a little help. Here we highlight people we have met who would benefit from small injections of cash. We will tell you their story, what they need, how much, how it will benefit them, and you can choose to donate if you like.

The Women's initiative Gambia

Meet Isatou And The Women's initiative Gambia

“She faced 3 challenges to her dream: she was young, she was small and she was from a poor family. Yet none of that stopped her. Now because of her, some of the next generation can follow their dreams!” - Isatou Ceesay

This incredible woman began empowering other women in 1997. She gave and continues to give them motivation to succeed and skills to better their lives whilst creating unique products from waste materials. From purses, keyrings, baskets & skipping ropes made from plastic bags, to compost bins & tables/chairs made from recycled tyres. We are so impressed with the variety of amazing products, all upcycled from what was once worthless waste into unique treasures!

Meet Sulayman Jabang

Sulayman jabbing is a man with a passion for nature and animals, especially birds and turtles. A born and raised Gunjurian with an environmental education background, he has always been interested in birdlife. Gunjur is probably the most environmentally aware region in the Gambia, having witnessed environmental disasters in its beautiful sandy beaches, forests, and wetlands. Sulayman is highly active in Gunjur’s environmental battle, is one of the Gambia’s most knowledgable bird watchers (we know this from a fantastic trip with him), and is the founder and facilitator of Gunjur’s Turtle Conservation project.

Anyone who is interested in the environment and is coming, is in, or is planning to come to The Gambia, simply has to go on a trip with Sulayman. Experienced Birder or not, you will love it, Sulayman's trips are amazing and we couldn't recommend them more.

Read our blog all about our day out with him in Gunjur... by the end of it, you'll be planning your trip with him!

Plastic Recycling Gambia Founder Alieu

Meet Alieu Wazza Sow

Alieu runs Plastic Recycling Gambia Ltd, the ONLY plastic recycling currently in the country. He and his team collect hard plastics on the streets of Gambia and grind them down, where they can then be recycled into chairs, tables, and other long-lasting household items. The problem is, he has a growing mountain of plastic and a lack of logistics operations to cope with the demand. The primary solution is investing in a truck, which will enable the team to collect plastics on a daily basis and travel to the most rural, and most polluted areas of the country.  Currently, he hires a truck and driver whenever he can, however, this is very costly and he faces problems such as; varying costs, unpredictability, and limited collection times. He uses the truck to collect plastics and deliver them to Senegal, where the plastic recycling process continues. Read his story to learn more.

Website: https://www.facebook.com/gamplasticrecycling/

What he needs:

  • We have highlighted a truck as his most important need
  • £5-7000 for a truck

How it will benefit:

  • Reduce costs of hiring
  • Unlimited usage and can reach more rural and polluted areas
  • Enable him to quadruple his plastic collection capacity
  • Shorten processing times of the plastic
